Explore and quantify the value of plant proteins in the Atlantic region of Canada through an asset mapping, value chain analysis, regional comparative analysis and capacity building in food system literacy project.

Project Summary

The study seeks to identify regional attributes and assets to capitalize on the potential of plant proteins. We envision growing opportunities to increase economic returns, improve diversity and sustainability within local food/feed systems, as well as contribute to innovative targets. With this investigation, we will identify the interest in producing, processing and adding value to pulses, oilseeds and grains in the Atlantic region, and explore plant protein value chain opportunities.

Researchers will be working with communities and businesses to determine their challenges in the plant protein sector and build networks in the supply chain. The project reports will be provided to these sectors to assist in business development plans and support funding efforts. The information generated in the initial phase of this study can be used to create a food system literacy program building on and enhancing existing programs and systems such as Agriculture in the Classroom.

Results and Impact

  • The study has documented what consumers value about plant-based proteins: current plant-based protein drivers, trends, opportunities, and challenges.
  • These findings would benefit manufacturers across Canada and producers in the Atlantic region to maximize the value of their crop farming.
  • The partners anticipate that the findings obtained from this study will help industry partners design innovative food products that appeal to consumers and stimulate interest in producing, processing, and adding value of high-protein crops in the Atlantic region.
