Canada’s Value-Added Journey

To Opportunity, Progress & Prosperity through Ingredient Manufacturing & Food Processing

Canada’s ingredient manufacturing, food processing and bio-products sector represents a $25 billion a year economic opportunity for Canada. The growth of Canada’s ingredient manufacturing sector can offer economic prosperity, reduced emissions, a strengthen food supply chain and economic reliance, all in the face of a changing global landscape.

In November 2023, Protein Industries Canada released an updated version of The Road to $25 Billion. The updated Roadmap outlines the opportunity - and the necessity – of growing Canada’s domestic value-added agriculture sector. In response to the challenges facing Canada, including declining productivity and investment in innovation, Canada needs to invest in sectors that will insulate Canada from disruption and bring economic growth - and that sector is agriculture and food manufacturing.

Over the past year, Protein Industries Canada, has been hyper-focused on the development of strong industrial policy for the value-added agriculture sector. This work has culminated in the launch of The Road to $25 Billion and the subsequent work we have done to drill down in The Path Forward on three specific areas: enabling capital, improving Canada’s productivity and GDP through innovation and market diversification and expansion. For each of these three areas, we have identified specific and actionable recommendations to drive economic growth in value-added agriculture.

Over the next year, Protein Industries Canada will continue to advance the Roadmap and the recommendations of the Path Forward to bring $25 billion in new economic activity for Canada. By capturing this opportunity we will bring new opportunities to farmers, bring development to local communities, create innovation-based jobs and help secure Canada’s food supply chain.
