Chair's Message
No matter how you look at it, the 2024-25 fiscal year was one of transition. We all found ourselves needing to adapt—to new leaders, new trade expectations, new grocery prices and new geopolitical climates. A constant, however, was the need for a steady supply of high-quality, nutritious food.
Canada’s ingredient manufacturers and food processors are dedicated to providing our country’s—and the world’s—families with that supply. Protein Industries Canada works alongside these companies to not only help ensure their success, but also to demonstrate Canada’s leadership in plant-based ingredients. From collaborative R&D work, to advocacy for supportive policies and regulatory environment, our partnerships within the ecosystem are helping position Canada to be the global leader in healthy, functional and sustainable ingredients.
It's a solid base to work from. But if the past year has shown us anything, it’s that we need to go further and act faster.
The world is changing, and by changing with it, our agrifood sector can lead Canadians to a more prosperous future. We have the potential to add upwards of $25 billion to our annual GDP by increasing our domestic processing of our crops into high-value ingredients. Getting there, however, requires strategic action, focused on increasing capital flow into the sector, scaling innovation infrastructure, capturing new markets and achieving regulatory excellence. We need, essentially, to diversify what we do and how we do it.
Protein Industries Canada has started work down this path with The Road to $25 Billion. The actions developed under this roadmap outline how the sector can reach its $25 billion potential by 2035, bringing economic prosperity to all Canadians. With the support and action from the full ecosystem—from farmer, to ingredient manufacturer, to retailer, to capital investor—we can continue to strengthen Canada’s agrifood sector, proving our potential as a leader in the global market.
Canada has the opportunity to supply the world with a steady supply of high-quality ingredients and food, built on the expertise and dedication of our farmers and companies from coast to coast. Over the next year, Protein Industries Canada will continue to work with them to develop and commercialize new products, resulting in a more prosperous Canada and a more reliable food supply chain for families around the world.
