CEO, Protein Industries Canada

Over the past year, Protein Industries Canada continued to demonstrate what is possible when industry, innovators and governments work together to strengthen Canada’s food production and value-added agriculture sector.

From advancing groundbreaking projects and attracting investment, to convening leaders across the supply chain and elevating the national conversation around value-added agriculture, this year marked an important period of momentum for our sector.

At Protein Industries Canada, we believe Canada has an extraordinary opportunity to do more here at home: to process more of our crops domestically, create more value-added food and ingredients, strengthen our supply chains, and build a more resilient and competitive economy. That belief became the foundation of our Make It Here initiative, launched in the year — a campaign designed to highlight the economic opportunity tied to domestic processing and ingredient manufacturing.

Through engagement with industry leaders, parliamentarians, senators, public servants and stakeholders across the country, Make It Here helped elevate the conversation around food production as a national economic opportunity. We were encouraged by the strong alignment and growing recognition that food and ingredient manufacturing must play a larger role in Canada’s long-term growth strategy.

This momentum was reflected in a number of important milestones throughout the year. Protein Industries Canada convened cross-departmental discussions with federal leaders on improving coordination across programs, capital tools and regulatory processes to help unlock investment in domestic processing.

At the same time, Protein Industries Canada continued expanding opportunities for Canadian companies beyond our borders. This included the launch of the Asia-Pacific Market Entry Program in partnership with Singapore-based Nurasa, helping Canadian food and ingredient companies accelerate entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for sustainable food innovation. The initiative reflects Canada’s growing reputation as a global leader in food and ingredient innovation and supports the sector’s long-term growth through diversified export opportunities and stronger international partnerships.

Alongside this international work, we continued to support innovative projects that strengthen Canada’s domestic supply chains and demonstrate the real-world impact of collaboration and investment. This included initiatives focused on improving ingredient manufacturing capacity, expanding processing opportunities, and increasing the use of Canadian-grown inputs in food production. Through initiatives like the Strengthening the Canadian Supply Chain Program, Protein Industries Canada and its partners are helping create jobs, attract investment, strengthen domestic processing capacity, and build stronger connections between Canadian farmers, processors and global markets.

Protein Industries Canada’s work is ultimately about building a stronger Canadian economy through innovation, collaboration and value-added production. The progress made this year would not be possible without the commitment of our industry members, project partners, governments and stakeholders across the country.

As we look ahead, the opportunity in front of Canada remains significant. Global demand for sustainable food and ingredients continues to grow, and Canada is well-positioned to lead. Protein Industries Canada will continue working with partners across the ecosystem to help ensure more innovation, investment and economic value are created — and kept — here at home.
