Growing More, Making More
Protein Industries Canada and its partners made significant progress toward helping Canada reach its food production and value-added agriculture opportunity in the 2025-26 fiscal year. From strengthening the domestic supply chain to growing the country's global competitiveness, the advancements made this year helped proved Canada can become a global food superpower, while providing Canadian families with more food options made from ingredients processed right here at home.
Strengthening the Domestic Food Supply Chain
After launching the Strengthening the Canadian Food Supply Chain program in the 2024-25 fiscal year, Protein Industries Canada opened to a steady stream of interest in the program. Three calls for applications were opened in the 2025-26 fiscal year, with two closing in time for project approvals before the fiscal year’s end.
A total of 14 projects were announced through two cohorts, covering the development of a wide range of new and reformulated ingredients and food products featuring Canadian crops. These include plant-based frozen desserts, dental sticks for dogs, a Canadian atta flour, a plant-based yogurt, new hemp ingredients and high-protein snacks.

Meeting the needs of the Asia-Pacific
As Canada looks to expand and build on existing trade agreements, the food production and value-added agriculture sector can play a pivotal role in cementing relationships. In August 2025, Protein Industries Canada built on this work with the launch of the Asia-Pacific Market Entry Program, in partnership with Singapore’s Nurasa Food Tech Innovation Centre.
The program brings together Canada’s potential to be a global leader in the food production and value-added agriculture market and Singapore’s growing demand for a sustainable, nutritious food supply. It’s designed to help Canada’s plant-based food and ingredient companies optimize their products for launch in the Asia-Pacific market.
To date, one company has been announced as taking part in the program: Avena Foods Limited worked with Nurasa to ensure their ingredients meet the tastes and expectations of Southeast Asia consumers. The result saw an optimization of Avena’s pulse ingredients for snack products in the Asia-Pacific region, demonstrating how Canadian expertise can drive both economic growth and global food security.
The Make It Here message is resonating
Late in the 2025-26 fiscal year, Protein Industries Canada went on the road to both share the Make It Here message and listen to what industry saw as the future for both Canada and our organization. What we heard was clear: Canada has the potential to do more, and Protein Industries Canada has the potential to lead the work.
We shared that message with Government, and they’re listening. We plan to continue to share that message, with the hopes of growing both our mandate and Canada’s Make It Here opportunity.
We hope you continue to join us.
