Chair's Message
One thing became clear in the 2025-26 fiscal year: Canada’s food landscape is changing. Our agriculture sector’s reputation is largely built on exporting commodities. The crops we grow and ship around the world are known as being some of the best and most sustainable on the global market—and for good reason. Canada’s farmers have invested knowledge and resources to ensure the crops they grow meet the highest standards.
But Canada could be doing so much more.
The opportunity for Canada to do more to feed itself and to send higher-value ingredients to meet global market demand is massive. When we process more of what we grow here in Canada, we capture significantly more value.
It’s time for Canada to make sure our food production and value-added agriculture sector is prepared to make that food here.
Late in the fiscal year, Protein Industries Canada launched the Make It Here campaign, aimed at helping Canada’s food production and value-added sector reach its full potential. The campaign brings the industry together—from farmer to food and ingredient processors, through to government and investors—to determine how we can support a stronger domestic processing sector here at home.
There’s plenty to be done, including regulations to be modernized, investment to be attracted, global markets being developed, and infrastructure to be built. All of this starts with Canadian innovation, including the R&D work being done by Canada’s food and ingredient processors. Together, they’re proving our country has the potential to make the products consumers here and around the world are looking for. They’re proving we can Make It Here.
Over the next year, Protein Industries Canada will continue to amplify the Make It Here message and its potential for Canada. The country’s opportunity to build on its agricultural strengths and secure its domestic processing capabilities with significant economic and food security benefits. By coming together to make this opportunity a reality, we can bring those benefits to all Canadians, from coast to coast.
