Goal

To develop a canola protein concentrate for regulatory approval, new food products, pet food trials and aquafeed trials.

Project Summary

Through the development and commercialization of a new canola protein concentrate, the partners aim to increase opportunity for the crop in the Canadian ingredient market, while creating a variety of food and feed products. The project will utilize AGT Foods’ existing technology to develop and optimize the ingredient, with a focus on increasing protein levels and yield.

By the end of the project, the partners intend to release new lines of food products, pet food products and aquafeed. The combined commercialization efforts will provide new opportunities for Canadian canola, while providing consumers with a wider variety of high-protein options.

Results and Impact

  • The partners explored novel methods for canola protein separation by using alternative methods of desolventization, dry fractionation and extraction. Two of these processes had not previously been used in the partners’ other plant protein fractionation facilities, and building on them will open new possibilities in other ingredients.
  • The processes use significantly less water than traditional wet processing techniques used to create a canola protein concentrate, improving the sustainability of the ingredient.
  • Additional plant engineering and market research on the market potential of canola protein concentrate and its associated co-products was conducted throughout the project.
